It all started with the Swagtron T1 in summer of 2016, closely followed by its ‘big brother’ the Swagtron T3, and now we’ve also got the Swagtron T5. But what’s the difference between the 3 models, other than the price? There are a few significant differences, and if you check out our Swagtron T1 vs T5 vs T3 comparison table, you can see for yourself which hoverboard will suit you best (there’s also the T6 model, but that’s an off road hoverboard so we won’t compare it here)

What are the similarities?

Being the same product but just different models, there are plenty of similarities between the three.

  • All use the same gyroscopic technology to steer and move forward, backwards and reverse using your body weight. They are very easy to operate and control.
  • All are UL 2272 certified (which is the standard every hoverboard should meet to ensure safety).
  • All 3 have the patented Swagtron Sentry Shield battery protection – this means the battery and electronics are protected by a special aluminum casing that prevents damage and overheating.
  • All 3 have rubber bumpers to prevent scratches and damage to the outer body. These hoverboards are solidly constructed and durable, made with high quality components.
  • They all look very similar. Looking at the Swagtron T1 vs T5 most people probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The T3 does have a slightly different design.

So in terms of quality and how they run, all Swagtron models are pretty similar and all are equally safe having been UL certified.

However there are some minor differences that might sway your decision, and we’re going to start by comparing the T1 versus the T5:

Swagtron T1 vs T5

The Swagtron T5 is the ‘baby’ of the group and is a more basic hoverboard than the other two. The T5 reaches a slightly slower top speed of 7mph (vs the T1 and T3’s 8mph) and it has a slightly smaller motor – it also has a range of about 7 miles vs the T1 and T3’s 12 miles. The T5 is the lighter of the three making it much easier to carry, especially for younger ones. The T1 comes in 6 different colors whereas the T5 is only available in a basic black or white – although these tend to be the most popular colors anyway. A main difference between Swagtron T1 and T5 is that the T5 is about $50 cheaper than the Swagtron T1 and approximately $150 cheaper than the Swagtron T3, making it a great budget buy for anyone looking for a starter hoverboard.

Swagtron T1 vs T3

The Swagtron T1 and T3 are actually very similar – same weight, range, maximum load etc. However the T3 does have some extras that the T1 and T5 don’t.

Swagtron App For iOS and Android

Designed specifically for use with the T3, using bluetooth connection the app can show information on battery status, temperature and more. It can be used to select riding mode, remote start, adjust steering sensitivity, and set acceleration or speed.

Built In Carry Strap

This is a carry strap on the bottom of the board that can be used for easier transportation. Made from strong fabric, this means you can 'grab and go' without having to worry about using a bag (most people still do use a carrying bag though as it's just easier to carry that way). The carry strap is handy in a pinch.

3 Riding Modes

The Swagtron T5 and T1 both have 2 modes - learning mode and standard mode, but the T3 has one extra - an advanced mode. This is perfect for experienced hoverboarders who want to take their ride to the max. You can easily adjust acceleration to reach top speeds and this is great for anyone who likes to do tricks or other cool stuff using their scooter.

Brand New Design For 2016

The Swagtron T3 has a brand new sporty, more modern look, quite unlike the hoverboards of previous years. Some people will prefer it but others will prefer the standard hoverboard design.

High Quality Built In Bluetooth Speakers

You can pair the Swagtron T3 with your bluetooth mobile device to play music while you ride. It's  super easy to connect your phone because when you turn on your hoverboard, it will already be in Bluetooth discovery mode. The sound is pretty good too.

Looking at user reviews, its easy to see from the numbers that the more popular of the two is the T1. Most people won't need (or want) the extra features offered by the T3. And of course the T1 is significantly cheaper for virtually the same ride. The overall reviews for the T1 also tend to be more positive.

3 Different Swagtron Models (Available In Various Colors)

Of course the decision is yours, but here's who we think each hoverboard is most suited to:

Swagtron T5 - This is great for beginners, and will be particularly popular with parents buying for their kids (it's suitable for adults too). It's also one of the best budget hoverboards on the market.

The main reason that we like this for kids is that it's one of the lightest and cheapest UL 2272 certified hoverboards currently available. The younger your child is, the harder they will find it to carry their board when not in use. At 18lbs, this is 4lbs lighter than the other two. It might not seem like a lot, but a child will certainly notice the difference.

It is also cheaper, has a slightly less powerful motor and doesn't travel quite as fast (although 7mph is still more than fast enough for kids) and of course like all Swagtrons, it comes with a learning mode. Remember it's not JUST for kids though - any adult (up to 187lbs) will also appreciate this hoverboard, especially if they're a first timer!

Swagtron T1 - This is a good all rounder and is suitable for all ages - both adults and kids (obviously taking into consideration the minimum and maximum load)

This is the flagship model and will be the most popular as it is suitable for everyone. With a learning mode it's great for those starting out, but it also reaches top speeds of 8mph and at  22lbs is still lighter than a lot of similar products on the market. It also comes in a wide range of colors, which the T5 does not.

Looking at the Swagtron T1 vs T5 the differences in how they run aren't that dissimilar and they're both sturdy, reliable boards. The T1 just happens to be a little faster with a slightly longer range. Many reputable review sites like Wirecutter recommend the Swagtron T1 as their top pick so it's definitely worth checking out.

Swagtron T3 - Will be most  popular with teenagers and tech savvy adults

Younger kids probably won't care about things like Bluetooth speakers and mobile apps, but guaranteed your teenager will. Whether or not its worth an extra $100+ though is for  you to decide. Most of the features and the riding capability are exactly the same as the T1. Unlike the T1 and T5 this has 3 modes (learning, standard and expert) so someone already experienced in hoverboarding may like the opportunity to test their skills with the expert mode!

Where To Buy Swagtron?

There are a few places that you can buy. There's the official Swagtron website and it's also available from many major retailers like Amazon, eBay, Best Buy, Modells, Target and more. The reason it's so widely available is because its one of the most popular  models, and Swagtron was one of the first to achieve UL2272 certification for their hoverboards.

The price doesn't vary that much - whichever model you choose will usually cost the same no matter where you buy (except maybe at times like Black Friday when there are deals on), so all you have to do is pick your retailer of choice and purchase. If we do find an offer somewhere we will make sure to update this page.

Which retailer would I personally recommend?

Amazon is good because of its fast, free shipping and great customer service. You can see the newest model, the T580 (with bluetooth and app) here.
