Swagway X1 Review: My Experience With This $200 Hoverboard
When hoverboards were introduced to the market many people thought of them as a joke or a trend bound to fade away in the near future. However, as it turns out, more than a year later these things are definitely here to stay and they’re constantly improving with new features and safety certifications being introduced. Recently the Swagway X1 has garnered quite a bit of attention having been reduced to just $199.99 (for a limited time) , I’ve written this Swagway X1 review to tell you a bit about my experience with this popular hoverboard. and what follows is an analysis of what it brings to the table and whether or not it can hang with the big boys!
A little history about this hoverboard
ALL Swagway X1 hoverboards manufactured since the new safety legislation was introduced in 2016 include UL2271 certified batteries. So even though it isn’t the newest brand on the market, there is no danger of it sparking or going on fire.
Swagway X1 Specs And Features
Swagway X1 Size And Weight
It measures 23 inches in width, 7.3 inches in height, 7.3 inches in depth and weighs a total of 22 pounds when out of the box.
UL2271 certified battery made of top quality lithium.
Build and Durability
It has a hard outer body casing for extra protection, aluminum wheels with rubber tires and bright LED lights that make you visible at night in addition to granting you some style points.
Max Weight Capacity
It has a weight limit of 222 pounds, which equals to 100 kilograms.
Swagway X1 Speed And Range
The model can travel for a range of up to 12 miles (19 kilometers) and has maximum speed capabilities of 10 miles per hour (16 kilometers per hour). The maximum speed you can reach depends on a lot of factors, including your weight, the steepness of the incline, the terrain, temperature and even your driving style. In other words, things like being on the heavier side of the scales or riding uphill will put more pressure on the hoverboard’s mechanism and drain the battery faster.
What’s in the box?
To keep this simple, when you purchase this model you receive five essential things.
First, you have the user’s manual as well as the accompanying paperwork, both of which you should hold on to. The user’s manual is extremely handy for first-time riders and can teach you virtually everything you need to know before you get on the board. As for the paperwork, you’ll likely need to produce it in the event that you must return the product.
Apart from that you get a free carrying bag, the Swagtron Swagway X1 unit itself, as well as the charger that comes with it.
Is it safe?
As already mentioned above, this hoverboard has a UL2272 certified safe battery. This is the standard requirement for hoverboards in 2017. Any self balancing scooter without this minimum requirement should be avoided as you can’t guarantee they will be safe.
Swagway X1 vs Swagtron T1 – What’s Changed?
So Swagway X1 was the original model on the market, released in 2015. In 2016 the newly renamed “Swagtron” released the Swagtron T1. But what’s the difference? Is it worth paying an extra $150 (approx) for the newer model, or is the X1 still good enough?
I’ve tried them both, and honestly found it hard to see a difference in the riding capability.
Here’s a comparison of the two:
Sure they look different – they had to do something different with the T1, and the main difference is in the design. Other than that though, I’m not sure the Swagtron T1 is worth paying so much extra for. If they were a similar price obviously I’d go for the newer model, but for the sake of saving $150? I’d probably give the Swagway X1 a go.
What I Like About The Swagway X1
The main selling point of this hoverboard is its size and weight, truly being lighter and smaller than most other models on the market. This means you can carry it around with you that much more easily and even use it while travelling around or on a road trip if that’s your style. It’s still pretty solid for the size, although probably not quite as durable as the newer Swagtron T1. The specs are very similar though!
What I Don’t Like
If you intend on using it in a place with many hills and inclines chances are that you’ll have an underwhelming experience, reaching low speeds and having to charge it up time and time again. That’s pretty much the same for any hoverboard though unless you go for one of the more expensive off road hoverboards. Standard 6.5 inch wheels hoverboards are really only designed to run well on smooth ground.

Swagway X1 Price (Clearance Sale Now On)
This is certainly one of the more interesting aspects of this model right now as there is a considerable discount available: the price went from $399.99 to $199.99! There is no telling for how long the price will remain that way, but logic dictates that it won’t be for too long – I have a feeling that once this gets sold out there won’t be any more available. Then your cheapest option from Swagtron will be the Swagtron T1 at $349.99.
For the time being, this unit is one of the most affordable hoverboards on the market. It will sell out quickly though!
We couldn’t have a Swagway X1 review without discussing the warranty! After all you need to make sure your purchase is protected. Swagtron happens to have a rather comprehensive warranty system, first of all offering a 30-day window to return the product, but only under the condition that it’s still new or unused. In addition to that, you can go on their website and register for the limited one-year warranty plan that covers manufacturing defects. It completely covers repairs and replacements, though they do add that they can elect to use new or refurbished parts at their own discretion. They also note that the replacements may be different but “functionally equivalent models”, meaning that there is a small chance they will send you a different product, but one that has equal capabilities as the one you returned.
Keep in mind that they specifically state that they do not cover damages and malfunctions that didn’t result from any manufacturing defects. In other words, if you break the hoverboard in a road accident or through improper maintenance they will not replace it. All in all, these are some standard industry practices and shouldn’t raise any alarms or red flags.
My Final Verdict
With everything being said and done, I believe that at its current price of $199.99 the Swagway X1 is superb value – it’s certainly one of the cheapest GOOD hoverboards available right now. I paid $399.99 for mine in 2015 and this is the exact same model! And although mine has taken a bit of a battering since then with quite a lot of use, it’s still working just fine.
In comparison to the newer redesigned Swagtron T1, it really fares quite admirably and things like range, speed, maximum rider weight etc. are pretty similar. I’ve ridden the two of them and in terms of riding capability, I barely noticed a difference. So even though its the original model, you’re not missing out on any amazing new features.
If what you’re looking for is a smaller, affordable and high-quality hoverboard then I believe this model is one of the best choices, at least so long as the discount is in place – if the price goes back up, I would argue there are better choices in the newer models. It’s likely though that this is a final clearance sale for this model, and once whatever stock they have is sold, it won’t come back on the market.
Once this is gone, a $200 hoverboard (that includes a free carry bag) is going to be virtually impossible to find. At the time of writing there are only 2 colors left in stock, so if you want one, now’s the time to jump in and get one!
